Whats in a (Brand) Name - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I gave a presentation to students at James Madison University a few weeks ago, and one young lady asked me what name she should put on her résumé â€" Nikki, the name she’s built for herself online, or Nicole, her legal name. Another young lady chimed in that her given name is difficult to spell and pronounce, so she’s always gone by Melody. Melody, only a sophomore, hadn’t begun building her online presence. Should she create her brand around Melody or her real name? Although for different reasons, I recommended both women use their nicknames. Nikki’s brand was already built, and she wants to be found online when employers search for her. After all, she can always use Nicole in parentheses on her résumé. A rose by any other name Melody, on the other hand, faces a different challenge. Although incredibly unfair, hiring managers tend to unconsciously discriminate against people whose names they feel might be difficult to pronounce. The decision was an easy one for several other reasons, though. She always goes by Melody, a perfectly professional name, and she is starting from scratch with her brand. To the world, she’s not known as anything yet. Should women change their brand names when they marry? I married young â€" fresh out of college. And I changed my e-mail address and brand name to “Huhman” once I began searching for a job my senior year. But what if you have begun your career when you marry? After all, the average age at first marriage for women in the U.S. is 25.6 years, and I have a feeling this number is going to continue to increase. Although there might be some who disagree with me, I recommend keeping your maiden name professionally and using your married name in your personal life (should you choose to take your husband’s name at all). You’ve worked hard to build your brand! Why change it just because you got married? What if you want to reinvent your brand name? Whether your brand name is tarnished for some reason or you’re simply looking to head in a new direction, it is possible to reinvent yourself â€" starting with your brand name. Of course, you won’t be able to completely erase the old one (Internet = forever), but that doesn’t mean you can’t start anew. Take a look at the nationally-known KFC, or what used to be Kentucky Fried Chicken. It’s been barely more than a decade since the switch â€" an effort to distance the chain from fried food â€" so few of us have forgotten KFC’s roots. But think about how far they’ve come in 10 years. Will we even remember what the “F” stands for in another 10? Think about what you did to build your brand name originally, and start from the very beginning. You don’t have to actually change your name like KFC did, although it might make the process easier. Perhaps you add in your middle name, or just the initial. Or maybe now is the time to bring your married name into your professional life. Take the time to do it right No matter your approach, take the time to build (or rebuild) your brand the right way. What to do When You Hate Your Job You spend most of Friday counting blessings that the weekend is coming and most of Sunday dreading the new work week. You go to work and you cannot stand anything about it. You hate your boss, the staff, customers, and even the places you go to eat lunch. There is no nice way to say it...You hate your job.The bad part is that you cannot quit. If you did, you would be doing yourself and loved ones more harm than good. You spend so much of your life working in a career that it makes little sense to not do something about your unhappy days at work! Until you can do something about it, try out some of these ideas when you hate your job.1. Assess the SituationThis is necessary because you may be getting wrapped in something that is making you miserable. But if that “one thing” was removed, would you be happy again? Assessing the situation will help you realistically look at the causes of your unhappiness.Ask the difficult questions about your situation:What do you hate exactly? Do you hate your job position? Do you hate your co-workers? Do you hate your boss? What is exactly leaving you with hatred for your job?Many times, your love for a job will return when something very minor is removed from your daily life. Make sure you assess what’s happening so you do not quit a job you could be loving if not for the random few negative points about it. To give you an example, here are samples of big and small reasons to hate your job:The company does not trust you or your leadership ability. (BIG) Your colleague always distracts you with his body odor and bad breath. (small)2. Have the Tough ConversationsOnce you have pinpointed the cause for your hatred of work, it is time to have the difficult conversations at work. Such conversations are tough because they require the possibility of creating confrontation or conflict at work, which you already do not like anyway. So, make sure you have done a thorough job at #1 on this list.Still, because you know you hate your job you need to have these conversations. What is the worst that can happen if you already hate your job anyway? Have these conversations with those in charge and see what can be done about it. See if adjustments can be made.What you want to avoid is the most common negative employee life-cycle. Far too often, a negative employee life-cycle goes a little something like this:Employee hired. Employee settles in. Employee is secretly unhappy but the manager has no idea. Employee resigns completely miserable and complains on Glassdoor.Your supervisors are there to support and encourage you but they should never be expected to read your mind. If something makes you unhappy, speak up! Your manager was more than likely in your shoes once and will understand. If you are an exceptional employee, the boss will do his/her best to help you.3. Switch Your PerspectivesA common saying is, “If you cannot change something, change your attitude.” It sounds cliche but changing your attitude to one th at is more positive will make a world of difference to you. Even if you hate your job, your positive attitude may give you the strength to start a new job search and get hired faster.Most importantly, you may discover the change to a positive attitude will teach you if the problem is “the job stinks” or “your attitude stinks”. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in not being happy that we unconsciously make others around us unhappy. Others know you are unhappy but they simply may think, “You have problems”, instead of asking you why you seem unhappy. When people have jobs they hate just to make money they can be some of the most difficult people to work with. It becomes hard to tell if these people hate their jobs or simply hate their own life. If you have been unhappy at work for a while, try changing your attitude. Make note of how differentpeople start to treat you.4. Vent in a Healthy WayVenting about your job in social media is not a good idea. But venting about your car eer, in general, may be healthy for you. Just be careful not to announce to the world that you regret all the companies you had worked for.It is very healthy to privately write about the things that make you unhappy. Not every thought or idea you have should be shared on social media. It is good to write about your complaints ahead of time and keep them to yourself or share them with a loved one. This way you are making sense of everything that is making you unhappy.In the future, when it comes time to discuss it you will have already processed and rationalized your feelings towards the job. This will allow you to discuss what you would like to see fixed in a calm and rational manner. You will be surprised at how much better you feel after venting to yourself or a loved one.5. Do Your Very Best Work No Matter WhatNever let your hatred of a job cause you to be lesser of an employee. Many times we get so unhappy at work that we start to work less. However, this is a very bad idea espe cially considering you may want to change jobs soon.The last thing you want when looking for work is to have your present-day boss say something negative about you to your future boss. Being a less-than-mediocre employee of a company is not the type of thing you can show as a “quantifiable achievement” on your resume.So, do not let others bring you down. Be your best and tough out the job you hate. If nothing else, you can sleep at night knowing that you did all you could and put in a full day's work. You may hate your job but you can always be proud that you did your very best!

It means you haven’t defined your brand enough so that your contacts know what you actually DO. There’s a cascade effect when you get non-relevant LinkedIn endorsements. One, many employers, hiring managers, recruiters, and head hunters are trolling LinkedIn for potential hires, and the skills listed in your profile act like “Google Juice” in terms of returning results that include the highest-ranked skills in those particular areas. So let’s say I am a recruiter and working on the back-end side of LinkedIn, looking for a hotel sales manager based on those associated skill sets. When I run the search, the people who have the highest number of endorsements for those skill areas are included in results. That’s how you get OPTIMIZED. But secondly, another downside to getting endorsements for areas that aren’t specific to your area of expertise is that it can take you out of the running for the area you really want to be in, and put you somewhere else. In short, you can end up in no-man’s land. And that does nothing to get you into the right universe where you will be found. But even more so, it also means your brand is not strong enough to clearly define what it is that you do. The next step is clear:   You have your work cut out for you in shifting that perception within your network. How are you going to do that? There are plenty of blogs out there that provide step-by-step instructions on how to position oneself online, but some ideas include writing blogs or sharing posts that topical to your desired expertise area, posting comments in the same vein, asking select contacts within your network to write a recommendation or endorse the skills you want highlighted. Another option is that you can actually delete non-relevant skills… because sometimes, LinkedIn makes suggestions for people on the site. If you remove the non-relevant ones, then LinkedIn might recommend only the ones that are showing. Another thing you can do is strategically select people on LinkedIn to connect with so you can engage them in your target subject areas. Or you can join industry/subject area LinkedIn groups to also fuel discussions and comments that can further solidify your position in that particular field or area. Passively reacting to a growing (and worrisome) number of LinkedIn endorsements that are not relevant to your career isn’t an option. You need to step it up and start a redirect immediately so you don’t lose any momentum in your career â€" because you never know what opportunities might be missed otherwise.

Memories - Jane Jackson Career Sometimes we come across something that means more than anything our ordinary everyday life provides us.   Its those little things, those memories that have a special place in our hearts.   This evokes such emotion and special memories for me, and means more to me than anything I have ever posted.   Its something I hope will resonate with everyone everywhere You Can’t Have it AllBut you can have the fig tree and its fat leaves like clown hands gloved with green. You can have the touch of a single eleven-year-old finger on your cheek, waking you at one a.m. to say the hamster is back. You can have the purr of the cat and the soulful look of the black dog, the look that says, If I could I would bite every sorrow until it fled, and when it is August, you can have it August and abundantly so. You can have love, though often it will be mysterious, like the white foam that bubbles up at the top of the bean pot over the red kidneys until you realize foams twin is blood. You can have the s kin at the center between a mans legs, so solid, so doll-like. You can have the life of the mind, glowing occasionally in priestly vestments, never admitting pettiness, never stooping to bribe the sullen guard wholl tell you all roads narrow at the border. You can speak a foreign language, sometimes, and it can mean something. You can visit the marker on the grave where your father wept openly. You cant bring back the dead, but you can have the words forgive and forget hold hands as if they meant to spend a lifetime together. And you can be grateful for makeup, the way it kisses your face, half spice, half amnesia, grateful for Mozart, his many notes racing one another towards joy, for towels sucking up the drops on your clean skin, and for deeper thirsts, for passion fruit, for saliva. You can have the dream, the dream of Egypt, the horses of Egypt and you riding in the hot sand. You can have your grandfather sitting on the side of your bed, at least for a while, you can have cloud s and letters, the leaping of distances, and Indian food with yellow sauce like sunrise. You cant count on grace to pick you out of a crowd but here is your friend to teach you how to high jump, how to throw yourself over the bar, backwards, until you learn about love, about sweet surrender, and here are periwinkles, buses that kneel, farms in the mind as real as Africa. And when adulthood fails you, you can still summon the memory of the black swan on the pond of your childhood, the rye bread with peanut butter and bananas your grandmother gave you while the rest of the family slept. There is the voice you can still summon at will, like your mothers, it will always whisper, you cant have it all, but there is this.                                                                         Barbara Ras
